Mictlan

Black Walnut Wall Sculpture | 2021

Black Walnut, pigments

15" diameter

In Aztec mythology, Mictlan was the underworld—not a place of punishment, but a layered spiritual realm where souls journeyed after death. This was a sacred passage through darkness and meaning, with each level bringing new trials and transformation.

This carved wall piece centers on a skeletal figure, surrounded by geometric, stepped motifs that echo the symbolic architecture of the afterlife. Burned and pigmented surfaces play with shadow and reflection, honoring the duality at the heart of Mesoamerican cosmology—life and death as one continuous cycle.
